The origins of Petzl

Petzl was founded in 1973 by Fernand Petzl, a passionate cave explorer from the area around Grenoble (France). With his background as a mechanical engineer, he perfected the safety equipment he had developed himself over the preceding decades during his expeditions. Those roots in caving produced groundbreaking innovations: in 1968 Petzl designed ascenders and descenders that made rope ladders unnecessary, and in 1974 the brand introduced the first head torch specifically for mountaineers. What began as the invention of one man grew into a company active in more than fifty countries. The mission has stayed the same throughout: to provide practical solutions that let people move forward safely.
